ST. LOUIS • When reporters first approached Sandy Alderson to ask about his team’s interest in Tim Tebow it was Aug. 9 and the team sat at 57-54, undone by injuries and lagging in the wild-card race. The Mets general manager responded to the question with some sarcasm.
“Are you insinuating we need a Hail Mary?” Alderson mocked.
Hardly.
They only needed patience.
Without even playing a game Thursday, the New York Mets strengthened their hold on a National League wild card berth. The Cardinals fell behind in the three-team race for two playoff spots with a stinker at Busch Stadium.
