In the afterglow of Scooter Gennett’s four-homer game for the Cincinnati Reds against the Cardinals a year ago, Post-Dispatch Hall of Fame baseball writer Rick Hummel dialed up Whiten. At the peak of his career, Whiten hit four home runs for the Cardinals against Cincinnati, and late into the Queen City night set a slew of individual-game records. Since, any time there’s a four-homer game, he picks up his phone.
“I find it weird that they still call me after somebody does it,” Whiten told Hummel. “Because there have been five people to do it since I did.
