Instead of fixating on the unforgiving math of the five outs he caused in four previous at-bats, Paul Goldschmidt calculated the one opportunity he would have in the 10th inning to dramatically change the feel of his evening.
The only way he would hit that inning would be with the bases loaded and two outs. If the inning was not over, he’d have that one chance to make sure the game was.
He turned it into much more than a single moment.
Goldschmidt, his game leaden with three strikeouts and a double play, turned on a 1-2 pitch and drilled it over the left-field wall for a walk-off grad slam in a 7-3 victory against Toronto.
