Brandon Crawford and Andrew Susac opened the fifth inning with back-to-back singles and Crawford scored on a sacrifice fly to cut the Cardinals' lead to 2-1 at Busch Stadium.
Pitcher Matt Cain drove in the run when he lined out to medium center field with the bases loaded.
Crawford opened the inning by hitting a chopper to Kolten Wong. The second baseman charged and bobbled the ball with the possibility of making a play but Crawford was awarded a single. Susac lined a single up the middle before a ground out moved both players up.
Jaime Garcia then walked Juan Perez to load the bases and set up a potential double play.
