JUPITER, Fla. • Greg Garcia and Kolten Wong, a shortstop-second base combination that has played together at the University of Hawaii and for several years in the Cardinals’ system, had combined on spectacular double plays before. But Garcia said that Wednesday’s fourth-inning twin killing on a ball hit by Washington’s Adam Lind might be his favorite.
“That one was fun,” said Garcia. “That one was a lot of fun.”
With the lefthanded pull hitter at bat, Garcia and Wong, with a shift on, both were on the second-base side of the infield when Lind whizzed a shot past starter Carlos Martinez, Garcia, going to his left, flagged down the ball and backhanded a throw to Wong, who had to dash well to his right to get to the bag for the forceout.
