After advancing just one runner to second base in the first three innings against Phillies starter Nick Pivetta, the Cardinals offense sprang to life in the fourth, with a little help from Pivetta.
Jedd Gyorko hit a two-RBI double and scored on a balk from Pivetta. Eric Fryer then added an RBI single to make the score 4-0.
Pivetta got himself into trouble early in the inning by walking Dexter Fowler. Stephen Piscotty then knocked a base hit into left field. Fowler beat out left fielder Howie Kendrick's throw to third and Piscotty advanced to second.
The reliable Gyorko then hit a deep drive off the top of the wall in right-center field to score Fowler and Picsotty and produce the game's first runs.
