The Cardinals grabbed a 2-0 lead over the Pirates in the second inning. The Pirates wasted no time in responding, beating up Mike Leake for three runs in the top of the third.
Leake's trouble started when he walked the first batter of the inning, Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer. Catcher Elias Diaz then hit a double that moved Mercer to third. After starting pitcher Chad Kuhl struck out, Adam Frazier blasted a two-RBI triple into right field. Frazier scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Josh Harrison to give the Pirates the lead, 3-2.
John Jaso followed Harrison's sacrifice fly with a double, but Leake finally ended the inning by getting David Freese to ground out to short.
