Carlos Martinez cruised through his first five innings, allowing just two hits while striking out six in 55 pitches. He ran into a bit of trouble in the sixth but rebounded to keep the Phillies scoreless.
After forcing a groundout from pinch hitter Michael Saunders, who hit for Phillies starting pitcher Nick Pivetta, Martinez allowed a single to Odubel Herrera. He struck out Aaron Altherr but allowed Herrera to advance to second on a wild pitch to Howie Kendrick. Kendrick walked, placing runners on first and second.
Pitching coach Derek Lilliquist made a visit to the mound, and Martinez responded by forcing a groundout in his first pitch to Tommy Joseph.
