One way the Cardinals can assure their runners will round the bases safely is by hitting home runs.
Paul DeJong did just that to give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Pirates pulled starter Jameson Taillon after six innings and the Cardinals victimized reliever Daniel Hudson. One batter after Aledmys Diaz drove a ball that was ultimately caught deep into left-center field, DeJong blasted a 405-foot bomb to right-center. It was DeJong's fifth homer of the year and his fourth in the last seven games.
Following DeJong's home run, catcher Eric Fryer drew a walk.
