In a seventh inning in which the Cardinals extended their lead to 7-0, the team also endured a moment of major concern.
Batting with men on first and second, Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez took an 87-mile-per-hour pitch from Phillies reliever Jeanmar Gomez off his right hand. Martinez collapsed to the dirt and laid there for about a minute as the fans at Busch stadium booed Gomez.
Martinez eventually got to his feet and walked to first while trainers examined his hand. He ended up scoring on a sacrifice fly hit by Jedd Gyorko.
Following Martinez, Matt Carpenter continued his hot hitting as the leadoff man with a two-RBI double into right field.
