With one out in the top of the fourth and David Freese on first base after he was walked by Adam Wainwright, Paul DeJong fielded a soft ground ball hit by Josh Bell. DeJong appeared to hesitate as he approached the ball in order to stay out of the way of Freese on the base path.
When DeJong grabbed it, he rushed his throw to first baseman Matt Carpenter and the ball skipped beneath Carpenter's glove and into the Cardinals' dugout.
