For a night, anyway, the Cardinals really missed catcher Eric Fryer.
The team designated him for assignment last month to accommodate Brayan Pena's return from the disabled list and minor league rehab assignment. Fryer would have stayed in the organization at Triple-A Memphis had he cleared waivers, but the Pirates put in a claim.
Doing his part to fill in for injured Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli, Fryer hit a RBI single and a two-run double to power Pittsburgh to a 5-2 victory over the Cardinals Tuesday night at Busch Stadium.
Meanwhile Pena had a rough game behind the plate while giving Yadier Molina a rare night off.
