After devoting several days at a hotel near Dallas to going from negotiation to negotiation to side discussions as the clock ticked, former Cardinals reliever Andrew Miller was nearing his home late Wednesday night when Major League Baseball announced a lockout and its commissioner immediately criticized the players union’s engagement in those talks.
In a letter to fans released seconds after baseball’s first work stoppage in 26 years became official, Rob Manfred said the players’ union “came to the bargaining table with a strategy of confrontation over compromise.”
From the other side of the table, the union sensed delay over conversation.
