Fractured seasons: This year is latest strange one for baseball

In my nearly half century of baseball writing, I’ve seen three strikes, a 9/11 tragedy, countless rainouts and even a game snowed out at Busch Stadium one fine mid-April Sunday in 1983.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been snowed out,” said Cardinals manager Whitey Herzog, at the time. “We didn’t have snow like this all winter.”

Before the game was called, wiping out a potential Joaquin Andujar-Tom Seaver marquee matchup, some of the visiting New York Mets amused themselves by trying to fabricate a snowman with snow that remained atop the then artificial turf at Busch Stadium.
