Fowler and Matt Carpenter, two of the game’s most accomplished leadoff hitters as recently as 2016, did not start Sunday for the Cardinals as manager Mike Matheny built in several days off for the hitters to spend “at work” on finding their swings. Carpenter and his .145 average were on deck when the Cardinals’ 5-3 loss to the Padres on Sunday ended, and Fowler had struck out earlier in the game as a pinch-hitter to drop his average to .146.
