Adam Wainwright's early departure with a left ankle injury opened up an opportunity for Mitch Harris to make his big league debut Saturday in Milwaukee
Harris, a former Navy lieutenant, tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out one.
The 29-year-old right-hander was drafted out of the U.S. Naval Academy in the 13th round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft. But before beginning his career in professional baseball, Harris served five years in the Navy, including three deployments to the Persian Gulf, Russia and South America.
He became the first graduate of the US Naval Academy since Nemo Gaines in 1921 to appear in a big league game
Harris received an invite to Major League camp this spring and was called up to the big leagues on Tuesday.
