ARLINGTON, Texas — The Cardinals' series this week against the Texas Rangers marks the first matchup between them and pitching coach Mike Maddux, who spent the 2018-2022 seasons with the club.
Maddux stepped down at the end of last season despite president of baseball operations John Mozeliak’s intention to bring Maddux back on a new contract. Maddux, 61, appeared headed for retirement after 20 seasons as a coach in the majors, two years as a coach in the minors and 15 seasons as a big-league pitcher.
This winter, three-time World Series champion manager Bruce Bochy came out of retirement to take over the helm of the Rangers under general manager Chris Young, a former pitcher who spent parts of 13 seasons in the majors.
