What Jack Flaherty started and Paul Goldschmidt supported early it took near perfection to finish against the feisty, unfazed, first-place Milwaukee Brewers.
The third-place Cardinals were less than that.
Mistakes were made.
Mistakes compounded.
A crisp game that opened with such promise for the home team saw a one-run lead vanish along with a home run over the left-field wall in the ninth inning and then the 10th dissolved on the Cardinals. Milwaukee’s go-ahead run scored on a wild pitch and an error put that runner at third. Two more unearned runs followed as the Brewers rallied to run away with a 6-4 victory Wednesday night in the 10th inning at Busch Stadium.
