Edman is the Cardinals' second baseman, but would move if he had to

JUPITER, Fla. — Tommy Edman widely has been advertised as the Cardinals’ second baseman for this season and has been endorsed by no less an authority on infield defense than Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith, who said “Tommy could have played with us,” meaning the rock solid defensive infields the Cardinals fielded in the mid-to-1980s.

But there he was the other day chasing some balls in the outfield. It was just for fun, but Matt Carpenter, displaced as the Cardinals’ third baseman by Nolan Arenado, mentioned Friday that if he hits the way he used to, he could turn up at second base and Edman in the outfield on occasion if the Cardinals sought to get both bats in the lineup.
