PITTSBURGH • Tommy Edman, who has played himself into a regular job, it not necessarily a regular position for the Cardinals, is not only versatile in the field and a fleet runner who has been thrown out only once in 12 stolen-base attempts. He also has surprising power.
The lithe, 5-foot-10 Edman, who has been up less than half a season, ripped not only his sixth homer of the year, a two-run shot in the second inning, but he added a long solo homer, his seventh, in the seventh to help stretch a tenuous Cardinals 2-1 lead into a 4-1 cushion.
