Moments after they lost, 8-6, to the rival Cubs and gave Milwaukee a chance to tie the top of the National League Central, several Cardinals ducked into a video room between the dugout and the Busch Stadium clubhouse to watch Colorado upend the second-place Brewers. Trevor Story’s homer in the 10th inning completed a comeback at Coors Field that retained the Cardinals’ control of the division despite their best efforts in the past week to surrender it. The Brewers’ loss assured the Cardinals of no worse than a tie after 162 games.
With a little help from their rivals the Cardinals turned walks into rallies and brought the tying run to the plate — but never across it.
