PITTSBURGH • Aledmys Diaz’s single in his first big-league at-bat led to a two-run third inning for the Cardinals, who caught up with the Pittsburgh Pirates at 2-2 Tuesday night.
Diaz was sacrificed to second by pitcher Michael Wacha. After Matt Carpenter walked, Stephen Piscotty singled to left. Diaz initially was held at third by coach Chris Maloney but then all the runners advanced, Diaz scoring, when left fielder Starling Marte booted the ball.
Matt Holliday’s grounder up the middle plated Carpenter with the second run.
