Aledmys Diaz, one of the Cardinals’ best baserunners though only a rookie, steamed home from first base on a single to right center by Yadier Molina as the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead over Pittsburgh in the third inning Sunday at Busch Stadium.
Diaz drew a two-out walk from Ryan Vogelsong before Molina lined to center field, where Andrew McCutchen couldn’t make connections with the ball which got past him. Diaz never stopped running and was waved home by third-base coach Chris Maloney. The throw came back to the infield and not to the plate.
While the Cardinals had a 1-0 lead, San Francisco, one game ahead of the Cardinals in the push for the second wild-card spot in the National League, was up 5-0 against Los Angeles.
