Shades of Enos “Country” Slaughter in the 1946 World Series, Cardinals shortstop Aledmys Diaz scored from first base for the second time in a week, although there was an error involved Sunday.
Diaz, reaching base for the 21st straight game, most by a rookie this season, was on with a walk in the sixth inning when, with one out, Matt Holliday hit a dribbler that Miami shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria fielded on the run. But Holliday beat an off-line throw to first and first baseman Don Kelly couldn’t contain the ball, which rolled away.
Diaz, who was heading to third anyway, was kept going by third-base coach Chris Maloney and scored from first to tie the game.
