ST. LOUIS • Speaking out publicly for the first time since news of a federal probe into his organization broke Tuesday, St. Louis Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said Thursday that he had no knowledge of any hacking into a Houston Astros’ internal database, either before or after it occurred.
“There was zero knowledge until the FBI launched their investigation and we became aware of it,” DeWitt said.
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said essentially the same thing on Wednesday in Minneapolis, where the club was playing the Twins.
DeWitt, reading from handwritten notes in a news conference Thursday afternoon, declined to go into specifics of the investigation, either by the FBI or the Cardinals' internal investigation that started over a month after the Cardinals learned of the FBI's probe.
