JUPITER, Fla. — A series of calmer meetings featuring smaller groups Sunday set the stage for Major League Baseball’s self-imposed deadline Monday to avoid postponing opening day, but chasms, both wide and deep, remain between the owners and players’ union.

Representatives for MLB owners and the MLB Players’ Association will begin an eighth consecutive day of negotiations at Roger Dean Stadium at around 9 a.m. (St. Louis time) as they attempt to end a prolonged lockout. The clock is ticking toward commissioner Rob Manfred’s promise to begin cancelling regular-season games.
