JUPITER, Fla. • Daniel Poncedeleon, who was 5-0 with a 1.49 earned run average while pitching for Class A Palm Beach last year, fell victim to over-throwing in his first exhibition as a Cardinal and the Florida Atlantic University team delighted its fans with a six-run explosion in the fourth inning, taking a 6-1 lead against the big leaguers.
Behind almost hitter in the fourth inning, the hard-throwing righthander threw 30 pitches while walking three and throwing a wild pitch. The Owls also hit two balls that handcuffed Cardinals second baseman Dean Anna, with one being charged an error.
