Coleman, for instance, is the only modern-day player to steal more than 100 bases three times in a career (Rickey Henderson had two over 100 and one exactly 100). Only two players have stolen more than 80 bases in a single season since Coleman had 109 in 1987. Coleman himself had 81 in 1988 and Henderson 93 the same year.
Lankford, who came up to the Cardinals in late 1990, the last season Coleman played for the club, had five 20-20 (homers, stolen bases) seasons, including four in succession from 1995-98.
Coleman, a former college football player who actually was the punter for Florida A&M, said longtime Cardinals minor league guru George Kissell strongly urged he turn to switch-hitting to be able to play for Whitey Herzog.
