Matt Carpenter’s three-run homer with in the sixth inning gave the Cardinals a brief 4-2 lead Sunday at Busch Stadium.
Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright, trailing 2-1, was lifted for a pinch hitter, rookie Jose Martinez, who singled with two outs to give the Cardinals runners at first and second. Carpenter then blasted a 3-0 fastball from Pittsburgh lefthander Antonio Bastardo over the right-center-field wall for his 21st homer of the season.
But, Jonathan Broxton quickly lost that lead in the seventh when he gave up a pinch single to Adam Frazier and a two-run homer to John Jaso, tying the score.
