Carpenter began his rehab assignment Tuesday with a walk, a run, a strikeout, and three plate appearances for the Cardinals’ Triple-A affiliate. He was back in the starting lineup Wednesday, and went oh-for-four with two strikeouts. The All-Star leadoff hitter suggested taking advantage of a rehab assignment to get well after going on the injured list twice this month — and to get right after a season-long search for success at the plate.
The Cardinals intend to re-evaluate his readiness after he plays Thursday, and they’re open to having him return to the majors by Friday, when the Cardinals start a home stand against Houston.
