ST. LOUIS • After a strikeout to end the seventh inning and send Cubs righthander Kyle Hendricks' no-hit bid hurtling toward the final six outs, Matt Carpenter was suddenly removed from the Cardinals' lineup.
Carpenter experienced tightness in his back, according to his manager.
Mike Matheny went on to say that the team received favorable reports on Carpenter's condition after the game and that the team's uber-fielder is day to day. Carpenter started at first base and batted third for the team against the Chicago Cubs on Monday -- part of a reorganized lineup for Matheny after a weekend of offensive struggles.
