DENVER • It took Cardinals leadoff hitter Matt Carpenter three innings to get three doubles and by the end of the seventh he had a share of history.
The Cardinals' leading player tied a major-league record with four doubles as the Cardinals routed the Rockies, 12-3, to claim the series and regain a lead ahead of Colorado in the National League wild-card race. Carpenter's four doubles tied Joe "Ducky" Medwick for the Cardinals' club record, and it had been done several dozen other times in big-league history.
