ST. LOUIS -- Matt Carpenter exited Wednesday night's game in the seventh inning after Nationals reliever Matt Grace's 0-1 sinker hit the back of his right hand. Carpenter was lifted for precautionary reasons, according to the team, and X-rays came back negative.
Patrick Wisdom replaced Carpenter at first. The Cardinals were leading the Nationals, 4-0, when Carpenter left.
Carpenter grimaced walking to first while holding his hand. The Cardinals' first baseman was removed after interim manager Mike Shildt and athletic trainer Chris Conroy visited him at first.
