JUPITER, Fla. • The Cardinals conducted only a fielding-hitting workout day for their pitchers Sunday _ no one threw off a mound _ a day ahead of when camp will heat up with the first official workout for the whole squad.
One of the highlights of Monday’s workout will be some 16 pitchers throwing to hitters, i.e. “live batting practice.” The full squad will have five workouts before the beginning of the Grapefruit League season on Saturday against the Miami Marlins.
Manager Mike Shildt, who hasn’t seen much of new utilityman Drew Robinson, acquired from Texas for Patrick Wisdom, said he was likely to employ Robinson more in the infield in early exhibition games, Robinson has played mostly outfield previously.
