SAN FRANCISCO • As they conducted an unexpected search for a new director of amateur scouting, the Cardinals looked into candidates from other clubs before returning, as they have often in the past, to their own.
But instead of the desks in the front office or the fields of their minor-league affiliates, the Cardinals found their hire in a different nook of their organization.
The bullpen.
The Cardinals will hire former lefty reliever Randy Flores to be their new director of scouting, and he will start Sept. 1. The team is expected to confirm the hiring as soon as Friday.
