Cards take RHP Woodford No. 39 overall

ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals used their Competitive Balance Lottery selection in the 2015 MLB Draft to select Plant High School (Fla.) pitcher Jake Woodford with the No. 39 overall pick on Monday night.

Woodford is a 6-foot-5, 210-pound, right-hander with a 94-mph fastball, who is committed to the University of Florida. It was believed Woodford needed to be selected early to sign him away from that commitment.

With their first pick, the Cardinals selected Brother Rice High School (Mich.) outfielder Nick Plummer No. 23 overall.

St. Louis also has the 66th pick, its last of the night before the Draft continues on Tuesday with Rounds 3-10.
