CHICAGO • Playing with little margin for error on the scoreboard and a shrinking one in the standings, the Cardinals donated more extra outs and more extra bases to the Cubs than they could take for themselves Tuesday in a doubleheader dud at Wrigley Field.
A quirk in the schedule and a wrinkle in the rotation allowed the Cardinals to use Tuesday’s day-night tandem against their rivals to hold an audition for two young lefties, one of whom the team will probably need to start Sunday. Tyler Lyons and Tim Cooney fared well, supplying the Cardinals with at least five innings and turning close games over to the bullpen.
