Cards stretch lead to 3-1 in fifth

MILWAUKEE • Matt Carpenter, Aledmys Diaz and Matt Holliday created a fifth-inning run for the Cardinals Tuesday night much the way they had fostered several other scoring innings in this series against the Milwaukee Brewers.

With one out against Milwaukee starter Wily Peralta, Carpenter singled for his sixth hit of the two games, Diaz beat out his fourth infield hit in two days and Holliday drove in his fifth run in two days with his fifth hit, a single, stretching the Cardinals’ lead to 3-1.

Peralta was nearing 100 pitches but the Cardinals couldn’t put him away after a walk to Stephen Piscotty loaded the bases.
