Cards select center fielder Hurst with top pick

It was a breakout season for the Glendora, Calif., native, who struggled early in his collegiate career after being named the California Interscholastic Federation Player of the Year as a senior in high school. He hit .250 with a .347 slugging percentage while dealing with a back injury his freshman year. As a sophomore, Hurst batted .215 with a .250 slugging percentage.

He hit one home run over those two years combined. In one game late this season, Hurst hit four home runs in one day as part of a 5-for-5 showing in which he drove in seven runs and scored six.
