Cards remove two from 40-man roster to add Jordan Hicks, Francisco Pena

NEW YORK • To make room on the 40-man roster for two players who elbowed their way onto the opening day roster, the Cardinals removed one of the few backup lefthanded-hitting infielders they have and a reliever who pitched well enough in spring to linger as an bullpen candidate.

The Cardinals designated infielder Breyvic Valera and righthander Josh Lucas on Wednesday to open up two positions on the 40-man roster.

The moves were necessary because the Cardinals do not have any player they wish to put on the 60-day disabled list and lose until May 28th, at the earliest.
