As they began a cram session of five games in around 50 hours this Labor Day weekend, the Cardinals got two superb, lengthy starts from pitchers Dakota Hudson and Michael Wacha and two rallies, one in the ninth inning, to complete a doubleheader sweep of Cincinnati at Busch Stadium. Six hours after the Cardinals won the first game, 10-6, Matt Carpenter’s pinch-hit RBI single scored Yadier Molina from second base for a 3-2 victory in the night game. Neither player involved in the walk-off run had started the game. All part of the plan to survive these five.
“If anybody is for it, we are,” Carpenter said.
