CHICAGO • The Cardinals have promoted first baseman Dan Johnson from Class AAA Memphis and cleared room for him on the active roster by reducing the bullpen by one reliever.
Johnson, 35, has hit hour home runs in the previous 10 games.
The Cardinals signed the lefthanded-hitting first baseman earlier this season to a minor-league contract and have had him stashed in Triple-A since. The team adds him to the mix of first basemen that the Cardinals have used to try to cover the games left open by Matt Adams' injury.
Johnson is a lefthanded-hitting complement to the two starters the Cardinals have used, Xavier Scruggs and veteran Mark Reynolds.
