Cards producing without top hitters from last year

KANSAS CITY • The Cardinals scored 24 runs in their last two games prior to Tuesday night’s trip finale with the Kansas City Royals here. The lineup was basically the same for both games, with Dexter Fowler moving into it on Monday, giving the Cardinals nine hitters rather than eight for interleague play.

But, owing to what a difference a year makes, all those runs were scored without their leading average hitter from last year, Aledmys Diaz; their leading RBI man, Stephen Piscotty; and their leading home-run hitter, Jedd Gyorko.

Diaz, who batted .300, was at Memphis.
