JUPITER, Fla. • Ozzie Smith, perhaps the best defender in Cardinals history, watched with interest Monday as the club’s pitchers went through some bunt defense plays.
“The little plays are very important,” the 13-time Gold Glover said. “The execution of those on a daily basis are what we have to get back to. To make those plays routinely has always been kind of a staple of ours.
“We were terrible about making the routine plays last year,” added Smith, who will be in camp for a week as a special instructor.
The Cardinals, with 133 errors, had by far the most in the majors in 2018.
