Infielder Ramon Urias, just added to the Cardinals’ 40-man winter roster after playing at Springfield and Memphis this past season, walloped three homers and drove in seven runs in a Mexican Pacific League game on Wednesday. That outburst left Urias, playing for the Caneros de los Mochis team, second in the league in batting average at .358, home runs at nine and runs batted in at 32.
The 24-year-old Urias, however, ranks first in OPS (on-base, plus slugging) at a whopping 1.065, due large to his 31 walks compared to 30 strikeouts in 40 games. But, a word of caution that the righthanded Urias might be the Cardinals’ slugger of the future:
Nevertheless, Urias, who began his career in the Texas organization but had played five seasons while playing for Mexico City in his native country, does have some power.
