Miami received first-inning hits from leadoff hitter J.T. Realmuto, No. 3 hitter Christian Yelich and No. 4 hitter Giancarlo Stanton but failed to score in the top of the first against Jaime Garcia. Martin Prado, the No. 2 hitter, hit into a 6-4-3 double play to erase Realmuto and the hits by Yelich and Stanton never left the infield. On the grounder up the middle by Stanton, second baseman Jedd Gyorko made a diving stop to keep the ball on the field and to keep Yelich from scoring.
In the bottom of the inning, Aledmys Diaz doubled to the gap in left center with one out.
