CHICAGO • Before his first start at first base in eight games, Jose Martinez could be found sitting alone on the stairs outside of Wrigley Field’s cramped visiting clubhouse.
A conversation he could have steered in a number of directions — toward anger, toward frustration, toward claims of unfair treatment — instead revealed an understanding.
But it is the best adjective to describe how the 6-foot-7 slugger fielded questions about his present predicament.
“The game takes you wherever you are going to be,” Martinez told the Post-Dispatch. “I know some starts haven’t gone well for me.
