The Cardinals understand the gravity of the latest headlines. William O. DeWitt Jr., the team's chairman and chief executive officer, and general manager John Mozeliak issued their thoughts Wednesday regarding the recent federal investigation into a possible security breach of the Houston Astros' computer system.
The New York Times reported Tuesday that the FBI and Justice Department are looking into whether the Cardinals obtained unauthorized access to the Astros' computer system, and Commissioner Rob Manfred said Tuesday that Major League Baseball has been fully cooperative with authorities in the investigation.
DeWitt said in an official statement Wednesday that he and Mozeliak learned about the allegations months ago, and that they directed Jim Martin and the law firm of Dowd Bennett to conduct an internal inquiry and to help the team in providing the relevant and requested information to the federal investigators.
