JUPITER, Fla. • Righthander Jack Flaherty will make what might be his last start of the spring for the Cardinals Thursday against a Baltimore team he handled for two innings a couple of weeks ago in Sarasota before allowing a grand slam to Manny Machado in the third on a two-seam fastball.
The two-seam fastball, for the most part, has been a good addition to Flaherty’s arsenal because of its movement and gives him at least one more possibility to go with his four-seam fastball and slider. The rookie is slated for five innings against Baltimore but the Cardinals are employing six starters now and, with next Monday’s off-day, they will need only five the rest of the way before they start the season on March 29 in New York.
