The Cardinals will have to come from behind to catch the Mets and take their midweek series.
The Mets got out to a 1-0 lead in the second against Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright. James Loney singled to start the inning, went to third on a double by Curtis Granderson and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Wilmer Flores. Wainwright then got out of the inning with a strikeout and, after an intentional walk, a fly out.
The Cardinals just missed getting a leadoff home run from Matt Carpenter for the second straight game. He hit a long fly to center that Alejandro De Aza made a leaping catch on at the wall.
